Back to Work

The Helicopter came for us

The staff bid us farewell
The ride was smooth
We passed over some manatees and the pilot circled so we could get a good view.
Check in went smooth
At the airport, we were reminded why we like Belize

Frosé

Mike has become obsessed with frosé
(frozen rosé).  Here's our recipe on vacation.
Rosé wine
Cranberry juice for color
Splenda
Coconut vodka - because coconut vodka makes anything and everything better
Put it in a few empty plastic water bottles
Put in freezer and wait a few days
Cut the bottom off the water bottles and squeeze out.

Other Birds

We really didn't come to this part of Belize for birds, but some were nearby.
White-winged Dove sitting on two chicks
Plover
Royal Terns (remind us of George Castanza)

Tropical Kingbird
Eastern Kingbird

Somebody please stir my coffee

I'm having a do nothing day.

Picnic lunch

Cayo Espanto excels at spoiling people.  We arranged a picnic lunch on a remote beach.
When we arrived, everything was set up.  They even made some strawberry lemonade at Chris's request which goes perfect with coconut vodka.

We sat down for lunch, and then rearrange the furniture a bit.

Mike went for a swim and Chris stayed behind dreaming of clorine.

Fishing in Belize

Some come to Belize to fish. We like to watch others fish.
.

Favorite outdoor shower yet

We have stayed at many nice places with outdoor baths and showers. Chris is now ranking the outdoor shower in the Ventanas over water villa as her favorite - and here's why. No millipedes, no lizards, no bugs at all; open and breezy yet just the right temp; sea below and sky above; lovely bath products; large enough to also double as a drying spot for towels, suits, and water shoes. Just be sure to keep the lights off at night or the shutters turned down for the occasional water taxi going past. Mike may have a different opinion - but I haven't heard any complaints from him like I did about cold water in the first class shower lounge in fiji!

Birthday Celebration

We got back from birding  to find the villa had been decorated for Mike's birthday. After dinner he even got a cake.
Chris loves when Mike plans this birthday trip.

Birding the Cayes

We took a boat out to some nearby islands where some birds nest.  We've seen plenty of frigates before but never in trees or up close.

The Reddish Egret carrying nesting material was fun.

Lots of white ibises too.

And a nice tricolored Heron.

Gringo in Belize

Mike found a Jerry Jeff Walker song that he likes.

Well he came down on vacation, 'cause he liked the tropic sun
Margaritas and the music, made it all seem fun
He bought a piece of heaven on the Carribean seas
He's a happy little camper in Belize

He began to build a condo, but the labor cost was high
His partner stole his money, that left him high and dry
His land is still a mudhole, where you sink up to your knees
And he's just another gringo in Belize

He's a planner, he's a dreamer, he's a sordid little schemer
Seems to think that money grows on trees
He's a whiner, he's a loser, he's a pothead, he's a boozer
He's just another gringo in Belize

Well he used to have a girlfriend that now he can't afford
Since one of his investments got busted at the border
He wasted all his money paying bribes and fines and fees
And he's just another gringo in Belize

Oh, he sold his motorcycle, somebody stole his boat
They ran it on the reef and now the damn thing just won't float
The only thing's that free is mud, mosquitoes and the breeze
And he's just another gringo in Belize

Okay, so it's just a song, but it's tempting.

However, two half built condos across from us convince us not to make real estate decisions while under the influence of sun and coconut vodka.

Pedal Boat

We haven't had the chance to pedal boat since we left the lake in Pistcataway,  (We considered living by the river in  Riverside, but couldn't find it).

We did have to disturb some cormorants when we pedaled out to a raft.  After some discussion, they let us on.

Back to Belize: Cayo Espanto

We returned to Belize a third time for Mike's 60th. Since we liked the overwater villa in Fiji, we decided on Cayo Espanto in Belize that has one overwater villa.

Getting there is half the fun. (Or is it getting there is half the trip).
